Scream aka Scream 5

It was neither campy nor fun, sir. It was lazy to a degree that no other entry in the series has been, and I don't excuse lazy screenwriting, regardless of genre or franchise.
 
I enjoyed it BUT I also entered it with the expectation of it not being a finale.

If this is the last film in this chronology, I will be pissed. If this is the bridge to a final film, I enjoyed it greatly.
 
While I still enjoyed this one quite a bit, as I said before.....and this was probably an effect of doing 6 so fucking quickly after 5....but the script felt rushed and a bit incoherant in points (minor plot holes) and not thought out fully as many other Scream films have. Other sequels had quirky dialogue that connected within the story too....and lots of effective red herrings, etc. This one seemed to maybe have less of that.

Stu absolutely needs to be in part 7 on a side note
 
Re-watched Scream 6... still like it but I can definitely see brocklock's point about not many risks being taken (at least 2 of the "main" characters should've died but let's be honest, all of the Scream movies suffer from not killing a main character to a degree). I still like the dynamic between Sam & Tara as I think that's a unique aspect of the franchise. This had some of the best scenes in the series IMO (the opening with Samara Weaving being a great "horror star" casting callback to the original, the Bodega one is still tense as fuck). The kills were a lot more brutal and gory than I remembered in a great way.

The villains weren't as fleshed out as the plot should've made them. I felt like the concept was actually kind of sound
(Richie's family getting revenge on Sam for her killing their son/brother, the utilization of "online conspiracy theories" to paint a victim as a villain)
but the execution left a lot to be desired and the cop father wasn't as subtle as it should have been on the re-watch. Mindy is still pretty one note as a character but so was Randy except Jamie Kennedy just fit better as the exposition dumper IMO.

As I pointed out, I felt like dialogue scenes got short-changed on the editing or script side. Several Sam/Tara scenes (notably at the shrine) and the Kirby/Tara discussion at the shrine, in particular, stood out as literally being 2-4 sentences of interesting discussion that got interrupted by other characters.

Just cancel Scream 7. 5 and 6 were a decent epilogue to the franchise. I didn't really care for the core four that much, but Sidney got a nice ending. Barrera got a raw deal imo, but I don't see the studio backing down. I don't believe Ortega left because of Wednesday, as she is very pro Palestine as well. If they try to proceed with the movie, I can see Jasmine Savoy Brown (Mindy) dropping out too, since she shares the same viewpoint as Barrera and Jenna. The director, Christopher Landon, is angry with the studio as well and I could see him bailing soon too.

I saw that news and was kinda baffled that the studio dumped her like they did considering her comments were fairly mild compared to others I've seen from bigger stars. Not surprised at all that Ortega's also out given the Wednesday shooting schedule as they shot overseas last year too but I could've seen her leaving in the aftermath if it wasn't about the schedule conflicts.

Lmao, scene stealing? I've never seen a Scream fan talking about how much they want to see McDreamy. Parker Posey probably stole the show in Scream 3.

Just end this shit. Ah crap, they probably bring Matthew Lillard back and I'll end up watching.
 
I'll repost my thoughts from the horror thread. I actually forgot to search for the Scream thread when I heard the Landon news.

Just cancel the movie already. Two directors have already excited the project, no leads, and they are scrambling to get Neve and McDreamy (Yes, I forgot Patrick Dempsey was in Scream 3) back in the franchise. Sidney got a fine ending in Scream 5, and the rest of the characters got decent endings in 6. End it. Scream needs to go away for a while anyway imo.

Neve is back for Scream 7 and in the article it says that Kevin Williamson may be directing in addition to writing.

Honestly I much prefer Neve as an actress to Melissa Barerra's performances in 5 and 6, but this feels desperate. I really don't care for the Scream sequels and I kind of force myself to watch them, so I'll do the same for this.
 
I can get with Williamson taking more of a step-inward approach as he was one of the main components that made the franchise so successful and I felt like a needed shift back to the roots of the franchise would not be a bad idea at this stage with so many cooks in the kitchen. That film he did coming off of covid (Sick I think its called?) was fuckin great for a streaming film.

And glad they got Neve back, its about time! This was needed, esp if losing Barerra and Ortega for this one. With Neve back, will this be time to start considering a closure to the franchise? Probably not....for some reason I see this going ten deep by the time they decide to call it a day. Ortega and Barerra probably will return for part 8 and wouldn't be even shocked if one or the other of them ends up being the killer in this one. I still wish they would do the Stu returns storyline too but that's a whole other deal.

I wonder if they will get Patrick Dempsey back finally as well since that certainly was hinted about that he was still in story with Sydney in part 5.

And I think Scream 7 should be the final arc and death of Gale Weathers.
 
On the one hand, I like Neve so much more than all of the new actors in the most recent Scream combined. However, if it's just her as a bit player with a new gang of teens taking the lead I'm not super interested. But, if it's her and the original band getting back together would anyone under 40 really be interested?

I guess what I'm saying is I don't really see a great path forward for this movie.

I do think the Scream movies haven't been the same since the Jamie Kennedy character was killed off. I don't like him in anything else, but his portrayal of Randy added something to the movie that has been lacking since (I know they tried in the most recent version to copy him, and it didn't work at all).

So, if you're bringing someone back from the dead my vote would be him. I think there's much more you could do creatively there than with the rest. Plus you never actually saw his death.

Based on who was announced to be returning today (I'm not going to spoil), I wonder if they are going to go in a Wes Craven's New Nightmare direction from Scream 7 where the real life actors are being stalked by a ghostface. Honestly, as someone that didn't care for 5 or 6, it sounds like a really cool idea that could breathe life in the franchise.
 
I don't love that idea but the later entries in the series are so up their own ass with Stab lore that it wouldn't be any worse to replace all that with references to the Scream films themselves.

I'm not a fan of Barrera's acting, but holy shit this is a quick blacklisting. She got good reviews for Your Monster from last year, but I didn't see it. Going from starring in Scream 7 to doing Travolta/Harlin movies shows you how quick Hollywood could end someone's career. And, regardless of my opinion of her acting talent, she got screwed over and didn't deserve the backlash (From Hollywood studios more than fans who have mostly given her support) she got for defending Palestine.

Sadly, I'm going to watch Scream 7 cause I'm a dullard and the cast has some appealing names, but Spy Glass is so scummy.

Yeah, this didn't grab me at all. I'll still watch just because I've seen the others (And there are some casting decisions I'm interested in), but I'll wait for streaming.

I'm anticipating that possible Mindy death scene so much tbh. Chad is okay, but him escaping death in part 6 in that way was ridiculous. It would be cool if they were the opening kill. Similar to Cotton Weary being the opening kill in Scream 3.

I'm not a big Randy fan, but he was amusing in that first movie, and somewhat likable. They ruined that likability in 2 by making him a creep following Sid to college. Mindy is just a huge asshole and a cartoon character right from the start.

Randy always struck me as a guy who was very self-aware he was the geek/nerd and just rolled with it (along with looking the part especially in contrast to Skeet Ulrich) whereas Mindy struck me as the, "I know all, I'm aware, and I'm still cool so deal with it, bitch," Internet/Social Media type attitude that is just unlikable and not very engaging from an outsider perspective.
