Kamala's Random WCW Bullshit thread

More from the Feb 91 Center Stage Chronicles pod:

- Dusty booked a "Dusty Rhodes Appreciation night" at the Omni (Which might not have ended up happening?) On TV they had Dusty plug it but instead of an Omni match they showed Dusty vs Tully from Starrcade in Greensboro as an example of Dusty's Atlanta history....

- Doom broke up at the Omni a few days before they broke up again on PPV.... and WCW aired both after the fact, which seemed to make Simmons look like a goof for trusting Reed and Long days after being beaten up by them.

- The infamous minus title reign came at this point as the Freebirds lose the World tag belts from the Steiners before DOOM dropped them to the Birds. Apparently even the Apters covered this. I'm sure I read it at the time but I don't recall off hand.

- Jim Herd wanted to make WCW Sat Night "Saturday Night at the Matches" and go live weekly, It would cost an extra 40K a month to do so and the sports preempting WCW would cause bigger issues so it was scrapped.

- When asked about Dusty bringing back the 6 man titles and soon to bring back the Light Hwy title, Herd told the dirt sheets he didn't see too many titles as an issue. "People want to see meaningful conflict, and a title match is the "only" way I know how to do that with."

- Mike Graham is grooming Pillman to be moved up the card.

- Pillman is also slated to team with Owen Hart next month in a new team called "Wings". As we've discussed in the past, that opens up an interesting alternative timeline where maybe Bret comes in to WCW and ultimately Owen's death doesn't happen.

- Luger was scheduled to lose to Riki Choshu on an upcoming Dome show. Luger was removed from the show.

I wonder if Pillman knew he was doomed when Mike Graham was tasked with elevating him.

I don't remember the Apter mags mentioning the negative title reign but I know the Napolitano mags did

Dusty wanted Pillman to be the new Magnum TA.

That would almost be as weird as the Apters covering the Duggan/Sheik incident, which as far as I can recall was them laying out the facts about the arrest and not commenting, then moving on to the rest of the kayfabe news.

Starrcade 92 is on and I never noticed that Jesse and JR barely acknowledge each other, even by their normal standards. They're both basically doing simultaneous solo announcing and it's really distracting.

The Heavenly Bodies and Corny coming in and joining Eaton as a Freebirds style unit would have been pretty cool....but the Hollywood Blonds were having their moment at the same time so you'd have to wait til June or whatever to hot shot the World belts to them.

If SMW closes down in this time (assuming Corny signs a WCW contract) then they can be SMW tag champs on WCW TV as a defacto Million Dollar belt type of deal or SMW can stay open but switches to a WCW funded training ground like they would use at the end of 93 with the Georgia bar shows.

WCW would ruin it of course by having the Armstrongs work WCW TV and lose to their guys, cutting the nuts off the SMW main eventers, but maybe enough other developing talent could balance things out. Guys who were disgruntled like Ron Simmons, or people who are only filler like Dick Slater doing SMW runs.

Didn't they have a match at Super Brawl 3? They could've had the Three Heavenly Bodies and the returning Ric Flair coming out of that ppv (might've been Bulldog's debut too). I think you could have both the Bodies and the Blondes, at least theoretically. NWA and WCW had booked excellent tag divisions before. It was 2 steps forward, 3 steps back a lot for wreslting in 93/94 tho.

Speaking of which, I just watched Slamboree 94. That and Spring Stampede before it is one of the best 1-2 punches for ppvs by any promotion and they released both in full as budget priced VHS tapes. A rare good move for Atlanta. For better or worse they'd be completely different in June.

Is there a way to keep the Stampede/Slamboree momentum going and bring Hogan in? They had so many good wrestlers, from guys like Steamboat to brawlers like Cactus (and they added Terry Funk into the mix at Slamboree). Babyface, and tweener in that last run with Steamboat, Flair still had some juice left. At least through the year he had an A-level title feud with Austin possible and a B-side with a Hogan main event with Lord Steven Regal. Losing Rude makes this extra difficult. He could have been Hogan's first opponent. Maybe do the Vader feud first (Hogan/Boss vs Vader/someone would've been good, too) and do a Sting-Funk run.

Hogan inserting himself into the Dustin/Stud Stable feud kinda works. Gives Dustin a rub, you can lead from Arn to Flair real easy, and if you add Hogan and Parker to Wargames with the brawlers already there it still could work.

Hogan/Regal would've been a great secondary feud for Hogan then, too. Like at least a Clash main event could be had.

And those Clash-type deals had already worked for Hogan before with SNME, a formula used more recently with versions of Cena/etc's Raw Opponent. He was already going to do limited dates anyway.

Hogan/Dustin/Dusty/Cactus/Payne vs Funk/Anderson/Buck/Nasty Boys would be a great War Games.

It'd be some fine sports entertainment. Stalling and facial expressions and Hogan taking abbreviated Regal moves before escaping the stretch. Add in the smoke and mirrors of Flair or whoever interferring and they have a solid, smartly worked match in them for like seven minutes.

I think Lord Steven would be a lot like Hulk's matches with Million Dollar Man. DiBiase had a lot of suplexes and such in his repertoire, that powerslam, but changed it up for Hogan with more emphasis on punches, kicks, cheating, submission holds and bumps.

Agreed on Mega Powers vs Blue Bloods. Creates a main event match out of thin air & it would've been a fun watch.

If you hold off on the title unification and Flair's heel turn until 1995, Super Brawl 5 could be a success with...

Flair vs Sting: For the Undisputed WCW/NWA/International world title
Mega Powers vs Blue Bloods
Vader, Dustin, Nastys, Harlem Heat, Pillman, etc...and Cactus Jack, Austin, etc if you don't run them out of town on a rail to fill out a strong undercard

I've already talked myself into a Regal vs Hogan match being fun in the Genius vs Hogan on SNME kind of way. Cheap heat. Heavy cheating from Sir William or Eaton/Jeeves/Taylor. Hogan dominates power spots. Regal stalls. An eye rake makes Hogan turn his back so Regal can get in some leg attacks. Regal uses chokes, rest holds and interference for the heat segment. Heel buffoonery gives Hogan the false comeback. More cheating cuts it off. Hulk up. Big boot. All the royals run in and Savage makes the save to set up the rematch.

Regal challenging Hogan to a posedown where he just cheap shots Hogan after not being able to push his biceps any higher
