D'Angelo

You mongoloids. Voodoo is the greatest R & B album since Songs in the Key of Life. Nothing's come close since.

That music video of him naked kind of ruined him in a way. Updated neo-soul would pass over the crap I hear on urban stations these days.

I bought Voodoo the week it came out. Thinking about this made me realize I've never had to wait 12 years for anything. You know how frustrating it is to be a fan of this guy? I haven't gone YouTubing to check out any of the new songs from those recent live shows, as I don't want my first exposure to them to be from some concert footage shot with someone's iPhone. I've waited this long, so I think I can hold out.

Last I saw from D'Angelo, he looked haggard and way out of shape. But I do hope that R&B makes a comeback. The few popular "R&B" artists of today are trending towards electro-pop like everyone else, and most of the rest is dated neo-soul. Also, forget D'Angelo's disappearance; Lauryn Hill dipping out was the greatest tragedy of the last decade.

That naked song was the shit. I didn't care for the video, but the girls loved it.

And yes, D'angelo looks like Ol' Dirty Bastard when he came home from jail.

D'Angelo has announced the long, long-awaited followup to his 2000 opus Voodoo. It's called Black Messiah, and it's credited to D'Angelo and the Vanguard. A short teaser for the album that features a snippet of music was posted online by his manager, Kevin Liles, as Consequence of Sound points out. Watch it below. Update: A new D'Angelo song will premiere on Sunday on Red Bull's 20Before15 site.

The album will debut this Sunday at a New York City listening session sponsored by Red Bull Music Academy and Afropunk. The session will be hosted by author Nelson George.

That's it. No more new music from anyone needs to come out after this.

I've read some people compare Black Messiah to There's a Riot Goin' On, and that works. It's the closest reference point I can think of. And there's nothing else out there that sounds like this album, not even within D'Angelo's (far too small) body of work. It's incredible.

WTF, that's awful. I'm not a big R&B/Soul listener, but D'Angelo was fantastic. He brought the hip hop influence into it and had some amazing albums. Really a trendsetter, and it's crazy that he only had 3 albums. But, quality over quantity in this case.

RIP

It's too bad, fuck cancer man. Also, his son has now lost both his parents in the same year; Angie Stone died in a car crash in March.

Last year, Raphael Saddiq (another great artist) said D'Angelo was working on new music, but we'll see.

This is actually a Prince cover, and it's one of the few cover songs that's perfect. RIP
